Weekly decisions
How to Evaluate a Fantasy Football Trade
A trade should be judged by how it changes your usable lineup. Adding together two player rankings or two season totals can hide the actual cost.
Compare the lineups before and after
Build a normal starting lineup with your current roster, then rebuild it after the proposed trade. Include the player you would promote from the bench and the free agent you could add with any extra roster spot. A two-for-one deal can create value through that open spot, but it can also leave a starting hole.
Use the right time horizon
Weekly rankings answer a different question from rest-of-season value. For a longer-term deal, consider workload stability, injury uncertainty, bye timing and your playoff format. Do not assume a strong matchup this Sunday makes a player a better asset for the next two months.
Price uncertainty on both sides
A returning starter may have a wide range of possible workloads. A breakout may be supported by real opportunity or by a short run of touchdowns. Write down what must remain true for each side to work. Avoid treating an uncertain recovery date as a confirmed return.
Check league-specific constraints
Keeper costs, future picks, salary caps and trade deadlines can change the answer. In a redraft league, only the usable remainder of this season matters. In a keeper league, a player’s acquisition cost and retention rules may matter as much as his expected scoring. This guide is a framework, not an automated trade calculator.

Why two-for-one totals can mislead
Suppose a hypothetical starter projects for 16 weekly points. Two incoming players project for 11 each, but only one can start and your existing alternative projects for 10. The incoming total of 22 does not mean a six-point lineup improvement. Map the actual slots first; bench depth and uncertainty can then be considered separately.
Your quick checklist
- Map the exact starting lineup on both sides.
- Include the drop or free-agent replacement.
- Check keeper costs and deadlines.
- Distinguish weekly points from future value.
