Draft preparation
Fantasy Draft Tiers, ADP and When to Pick a Player
Rankings describe preference. Average draft position describes a market. Tiers help you decide whether waiting at one position costs more than waiting at another.
Build tiers around meaningful gaps
A tier groups players you view similarly given your scoring, expected role and uncertainty. Small differences between adjacent projections do not always justify separate tiers. The useful question is whether the next group offers a meaningfully weaker option, not whether two players have identical projected points.
Use ADP from a matching draft environment
Compare the league size, scoring, date range and draft type behind an ADP sample. A best-ball or superflex market may price players differently from a managed one-QB redraft league. ADP is an average of selections, not a guarantee that a particular player will last until that pick.
Compare both sides of your next turn
List your current pick and your next pick. Count the selections between them, then compare the depth of the remaining tiers. If several comparable receivers remain but only one back remains in your preferred group, that can justify considering the back now. It does not require following a rigid position sequence.
Choose a range with a fallback
A target range should reflect your valuation, the room and the remaining alternatives. Write down what you will do if your preferred player is taken. Avoid promising an exact availability percentage without a relevant draft-position distribution. Fantasy Overdrive’s 2027 player-specific targets are not published yet.

Plan the turn
In a standard 12-team snake draft from slot five, your first four overall picks are 5, 20, 29 and 44. There are 14 selections between picks 5 and 20. A player with ADP 18 might be available at 20, but ADP alone cannot establish the probability.
Your quick checklist
- Match ADP to your format.
- Mark tier breaks.
- Know the distance to your next selection.
- Prepare at least one alternative.
