Draft preparation
Fantasy Football Draft Strategy by Position
A draft plan should tell you how to respond to the board. It should not force a predetermined position in every round regardless of who is available.
Count the jobs your roster must fill
Write down starting QB, RB, WR, TE and FLEX slots, along with bench and reserve rules. A league starting three receivers asks you to fill a different lineup from one starting two. Eligibility and scoring determine which positions compete for the same slots.
Compare the cost of waiting
At each turn, compare the player available now with the options likely to be left at your next turn. Consider the strength of those alternatives at several positions. A high-scoring quarterback can still be a less urgent pick in a one-QB league if similar starters remain, while superflex changes that replacement pool.
Treat RB and WR strategies as flexible structures
Starting with several receivers can work only if later backfield options remain useful. Starting with several backs still leaves receiving slots to fill. Draft labels such as zero-RB or hero-RB describe roster structures; they are not guarantees. Price, player availability and league depth should decide whether a structure remains sensible.
Give bench picks a purpose
Later picks can provide immediate coverage, a path to a starting role or a deliberate upside bet. Decide which job each pick serves. If your league requires a kicker or defense, budget roster slots for them and check when those positions must be filled; avoid recommending a universal round without the league rules.

Compare the drop-off
Illustrative only: choosing a receiver now might improve that slot by two projected weekly points over your next-turn option, while choosing a back might improve his slot by four. That suggests examining the back first, but only if the projections, roster needs and availability assumptions are comparable.
Your quick checklist
- Count required starters.
- Compare next-turn alternatives.
- Keep a flexible position plan.
- Assign every bench pick a job.
