Fantasy Football Waiver-Wire Strategy
The best waiver claim for your team is the one that improves the lineup or creates a useful future option. Last week’s highest scorer may do neither.
Identify the reason a role could last
A workload change matters more than an isolated touchdown. Ask whether the player gained a starting job, earned more routes or benefited from a temporary absence. Separate a one-week fill-in from a player who could remain useful when the injured teammate returns. Verify the news before spending your waiver priority.
Compare the add with the player you would drop
A waiver move has two sides. Write down the starts the new player could realistically make and the opportunities you would lose by cutting the current player. In a shallow league, an easily replaceable bench scorer may be less useful than a backup with a clear path to a much bigger role. Deep leagues can reward reliable smaller workloads.
Build a budget around your league
FAAB is a finite resource. Consider remaining weeks, minimum bids, whether zero-dollar adds are allowed and the alternatives available. There is no universal correct percentage for every league. A team facing an immediate starting hole has a different need from a healthy roster looking for upside.
Order claims with fallback options
List your preferred addition first, then acceptable substitutes. Read your platform’s conditional-claim rules so winning one claim does not accidentally release a different player you intended to keep. Check the processing time and remember that free agency may work differently once waivers clear.
WORKED EXAMPLE · ILLUSTRATIVE
Budget in dollars, not just percentages
With a hypothetical $100 starting budget and $35 remaining, a $10 bid uses 10% of the original budget but about 29% of what you have left. Compare that commitment with the number of starts you expect to get and the cost of the next-best option. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommended bid.
Your quick checklist
- Confirm waiver deadline and bid rules.
- Check whether the role is temporary.
- Choose the drop before submitting.
- Add fallback claims and verify results.
